Holocaust Memorial Day in Haywards Heath
Haywards Heath Town Hall, 40 Boltro Road, RH16 1BA
27 Jan 23 - 14:00 to 15:00
Holocaust Memorial Day will be held at the Town Hall at 2pm on Friday 27th January 2023. The event will be inside to avoid bad weather, but attendees will still be able to place stones at the War Memorial in Muster Green afterwards. This event has been organised by Haywards Heath Amnesty International and Haywards Heath Town Council and everyone is welcome to attend this commemoration which remembers the six million Jewish people who were murdered during the Holocaust, alongside millions of others who were killed under Nazi persecution. The theme for this year's Holocaust Memorial Day is Ordinary People and it will also remember people who have been killed in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
There will be an art display, a collaboration between Oathall Community College and Great Walstead School, created with images from the students, depicting ordinary people who belonged to the categories of either perperators, bystanders or rescuers. These will be on display in the first floor of Haywards Heath Town Council. The event will feature a talk by Lesley Urbach from Generation2Generation, a charity that provides speakers to tell their family Holocaust stories. Lesley's family came from Germany and her mother and aunt arrived in West Sussex as children on the Kindertransport. Her talk will represent her mother's experience and her grandparents, who were murdered at Auschwitz.
